Better than Life

There is something that is better than life itself, but we don’t pay attention to it most of the time. We think life is the utmost quest of our heart. We get excited, knowing that Christ came to give us life and that abundantly (John 10:10). We work hard in the physical world and pray hard in the spiritual realm, so that we can get to have this abundant life. In doing so, we miss the mark.

Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. Psalm 63:3

Yes, His love is much better than life itself. It is this truth that made many martyrs go through death with singing. Those who enter into deeper walk with God can embrace God, not just for the life that He gives, but because of who he is: love.

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine; Song of Songs 1:2

Experiencing God at this level allows us to move our prayer from asking for things to seeking His kisses. As we come to the awareness that His love is better than life, we surrender our life to His care and make our hearts cry to be in His love. Don’t settle for life, a good life, but strive to the most excellent higher ground of being in His love.

Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. Psalm 84:10 NIV

In life mode, prayer is chatter: we lament when life is not good, and praise when life is good. In love mode, we simply become dumbfounded, amazed by His glory. That is the sweet spot in which our soul longs to be. God, open our hearts’ eyes and usher us into this glorious domain. Amen.
