“Be still. Be patient. Wait for the Lord to act.” Psalm 37:7 NIrV
When we want God’s will more than anything, we come to Him humbly seeking guidance, protection, and provision. And sometimes, the Lord makes us wait for years. David tells us that he was patient while he waited for the Lord and God turned to him and heard his cry for help (Psalm 40:1).
We see when our prayer is about major decisions it takes a while for its materialization. Those waiting times are precious for they provide great opportunity for us to grow in closeness to Him. We know it was hard to go through those years in faith believing that God is working behind the scenes. At the same time, it was pleasant to live in expectation to see His glory in everything that was happening. The fact of the matter is that He in fact is busy doing the things we want Him do – guiding us, protecting us, and yes eventually providing for us.
Waiting on the Lord is motivated by the drive that we want His will above all. And God takes such earnest desires of ours seriously to provide us with the perfect gift. More than the gift itself, He also wants to shape us into the likeness of His Son Jesus Christ in the process. When everything is said and done, He makes everything beautiful in its and His time (Ecc 3:11).
We admit we failed miserable at times during the those waiting years. There were times we were far from being patient and still. At the same time, we testify to His grace who gave us the courage to come back and cruise through time with patience and stillness. We have seen both sides, one based on our efforts and the other in dependence on the Almighty. These are the treasures that remain with us for eternity.
We are instructed to be still and know He is God (Psalm 46:10). While waiting on the Lord, our experience reinforces that He is good – loving to plan the best for us; wise to know what is the best for us; all powerful to bring about His plan to fruition. Life is really an adventure as we walk with Him and the potential to grow in the process is limitless.
